Growing knowledge, growing communities
Welcome to the Master Gardener Association of Tippecanoe County (MGATC), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting horticulture education and community outreach. Established in 1988, MGATC has grown to become a vibrant community of passionate gardeners, with over 110 members coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and gardening interests.
At MGATC, our mission is to provide high-quality educational programs, workshops, and events to the community, focusing on home horticulture and gardening. We believe that everyone deserves access to reliable and accurate information about horticulture, and we strive to make gardening information accessible to people of all ages and skill levels.
Demonstration Garden
One of our flagship projects is the Demonstration Garden, which showcases various gardening techniques and plants. Since its inception in 1997, the Demonstration Garden has become a beloved community resource, providing fresh produce to local food banks and serving as a thriving example of sustainable gardening practices. Visitors are welcome to explore the garden, attend workshops, and connect with fellow gardening enthusiasts.
Display and Idea Gardens
Our Display and Idea Gardens are a collection of smaller, themed gardens, each showcasing a unique aspect of gardening. These specialty gardens are designed to inspire and educate visitors, highlighting innovative techniques, and exploring the versatility of plants. With gardens dedicated to topics such as pollinators, medicinal plants, and sensory experiences, visitors can explore and learn about a wide range of gardening topics.
Community Projects and Outreach
MGATC is committed to community outreach and engagement. Our members participate in various projects, including:
- Collaborating with local organizations, such as the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department, to develop community gardens and green spaces.
- Developing educational programs and workshops for schools, community centers, and local businesses.
- Partnering with other organizations, such as the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation, to promote environmental sustainability and conservation.
Compost Project
In 2018, MGATC launched its Compost Project, funded by the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation. This project aims to create a comprehensive composting program for the Extension Gardens, Demonstration Gardens, and other community gardens. Our Compost Committee has been working tirelessly to develop a plan for managing the compost piles, ensuring proper moisture levels, and implementing a watering system.
