Our Story

Ivy Nursery is a family-owned business that has been serving the Charlottesville area for over 45 years. Founded in 1975 by Clare and George Carter, both of whom have Master's Degrees in Landscape Architecture from the University of Virginia, our nursery is situated on seven acres on Scenic Rte. 250 West, just west of the University of Virginia, The Boar's Head Inn, and Farmington Country Club.

Our Philosophy

At Ivy Nursery, we believe in three core principles that guide our business. FIRST, we strive to offer the healthiest, freshest, and most beautiful plants we can find. SECOND, we seek to hire staff members who possess knowledge and experience in landscape architecture, horticulture, and gardening, and who embody kindness, empathy, and a love of helping others. And THIRD, we aim to provide the best horticulture and design advice we can to our customers.

Roses

Roses are a specialty at Ivy Nursery, with over a hundred different varieties to choose from, including hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, shrub roses, and climbers. We also carry David Austin roses, known for their old-fashioned fragrance and double, peony-like flowers. For beginners, our Knockout roses are perfect, with their easy care and prolific bloom.

Annuals

Our annuals selection is unparalleled, with a wide range of pansies, primroses, geraniums, impatiens, and more. All our annuals are locally grown by pollinator-friendly growers who don't use pesticides harmful to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Design and Planting Services

Our staff of horticulturists and gardeners is happy to help you design, plant, and deliver pots, urns, planters, and window boxes for special occasions or special requests. We can also advise on which varieties are most deer resistant and provide expert guidance on plant care and maintenance.
